In 1824, the city of Brisbane was chosen as a place for secondary offenders from the Sydney Colony, but was soon abandoned and opened to free settlement in 1842. Named in honour of Scotsman Sir Thomas Brisbane, the city of Brisbane is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Australia.
