The Glarnerland is one of the steepest alpine valleys. There are impressive large differences in height. It is open to the north to Linthebene. The opposites are reflected in the climate. It changes within a few kilometers from mild on the Walensee, where southern flora can be found, to high alpine on the glaciated mountain peaks, and wind blows through the valley and temperature records can be measured.
The 685 km2 canton corresponds approximately to the catchment area of the Linth.
