Classic Versions 1943 (Australia)

1943/47

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Red - War Time Production - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - London and Leeds - ±1943/1947

Dimensions of the box: 16.2 x 19.5 x 3.2 cm

It resembles the "Small box" black a lot, however at closer investigation thre are a few differences. On the inside of the lid is a small sticker saying:

WAR-TIME PRODUCTION

The manufacturers regret that owing to restrictions in the manpower and materials they have no alternative than to ask you to accept this production as a justifiable standard of war-time craftsmanship.

Lid: The lid shows the black/red "locomotive illustration" as of the editions in Great Britain. The rims of the lid are red now.
Rent on Piccadilly: The rent on Piccadilly is £22 at the unimproved ground, like for both other yellow streets.
Community Chest / Chance: The pink Chance and blue Community Chest cards are smaller (40 x 76 mm) and very poor.
Tokens: The six tokens are wood turned pawns.
Money: The banknotes are printed on somewhat cheaper paper and the colours are dull. The seven denominations are £1 (grey), £5 (red on white), £10 (black on white), £20 (pink), £50 (yellow), £100 (red on white) and £500 (green).
Houses / Hotels: The green houses and red hotels are made of smooth wood. However the houses are almost the same length as the hotels and besides they are unequal in length.
Dice: The dice are brown with white pips.
Rules: At the end is said the manufacturers are willing to answer your questions and therefore ask to "Please enclose 2d. stamp."

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Blue Grey - War Time Production - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - Leeds - ±1943/1947

Dimensions of the box: 16.2 x 19.5 x 3.2 cm

It is a version corresponding very much to the England issue of that era, because:

It also contains the very special spinner supplied as a substitute for both dice. In this case the red/white disc has been mounted on a white support with black text, while that of the English edition is black with white text. The maker apologises with the following text on the support: "Owing to the difficulty of obtaining dice it has been necessary to include this substitute".
Like in the English edition the tokens are flat cardboard figures on wooden base. However, in this case these six tokens are rectangular little cardboards with a picture, while the English issue has shaped figures. They are: shoe, telephone, iron, hat, house and lamp.
The blue grey paper used for the box and the board's back was of course also caused by shortage of material availability.
It has to be mentioned about the game board the colour bars of the first three streets after Jail to be very light pink. That applies for the property deeds as well. The Chance cards are pink through and the Community Chest cards blue green.
The seven banknotes are printed in black on coloured paper, except for the 5 and 100 that are printed in red on white paper. The denominations are: £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100 and £500.

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Brown - War Time Production - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - Leeds - ±1943/1947

Dimensions of the box: 16.2 x 19.5 x 3.2 cm

Except for the different colored paper used for the box, this edition is identical in all aspects with the blue grey edition.

The property deeds of the Old Kent Road, Whitechapel, Mayfair and Park Lane have the same interrupted border lines as shown with the Deluxe Gold edition of 1936 and so it confirms this to be typical for the by John Sands made editions.

This is the little paper of his set telling what "war-time production" implies.

The end of the Rules of this edition states: "Questions on Monopoly will be answered gladly by the manufacturers. Please enclose 2d.stamp."

Edition: London edition - "Long Box" - Brown - War Time Production - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - Leeds - ±1943/1947

Dimensions of the box: 27.0 x 51.4 x 4.8 cm

An interesting note, all Australian War Time editions have the same Pat.app.for No.3796-36 on the box, while the British versions already had the Patent No. 453689.

It is very interesting to see John Sands even made a simple version of the long box editions like the above mentioned "long box black" and "Deluxe Gold edition". The innerbox is also divided into a "banker's section" plus two filling pieces. However the materials used are much poorer, like the same brown paper for the box as from the "Small box", grey and blue green paper for the filling pieces and the board's back side. However, the green banker's tray has a lid.

The Chance cards are pink and the Community Chest cards are grey blue. The seven banknotes are printed in black on slightly coloured paper (except for the red 5 and 500 notes). The denominations are: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500.

The houses and hotels are made of wood. The end of the Rules of this edition states: "Questions on Monopoly will be answered gladly by the manufacturers. Please enclose 2d.stamp."
