In 1197, what was then Kirchdorf was one of the first in the Prince-Bishopric of Münster to obtain city rights. In the course of this, the city fortifications with walls, ramparts and a double ditch were built. The Walkenbrückentor and also the Pulverturm as well as the Umflut and the Promenade are witnesses of this time.
