Liverpool Football Club
Champions of Europe
In May 2005, 750,000 cheering fans turned the city of Liverpool bright red as they watched the triumphant winners of the UEFA Champions League drive through the streets on an open top bus. Liverpool FC, the returning heroes, flew direct from Istanbul to the city's John Lennon airport and immediately boarded the bus, proudly displaying the trophy to the public.
However, at half time, the night before it was a very different story. Facing AC Milan, Liverpool were 3-0 down and it seemed impossible that they could recover against the Italians. The match is now viewed as the most incredible moment in an already illustrious history. After an inspirational talk from Manager Rafael Benitez and a passionate rally from the 20,000 or so Anfield fans inside the Ataturk stadium, Steven Gerrard and his team mates turned a near disaster into a victory that united British football fans everywhere. Tony Blair and even the Queen sent personal messages of congratulations to the team!
From humble beginnings on a local MP's pitch to 5 European Championship victories, the Reds have seen their fair share of both victory and tragedy in over 100 years of existence. Leading lights of football such as Peter Beardsley, Ian Rush and John Barnes have all tasted success in front of the legendary Kop stand, and a series of truly great Managers, from Bill Shankly to Kenny Dalglish to today's guiding light, Benitez have ensured the team retains a high profile. The Anfield fanbase just keeps growing and the 2005 victory is both a reward to the loyal, and an introduction to new supporters.
