Classic Versions 1936 (Australia)

1936

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Black Trade Mark - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - London and Leeds - ±1936

Dimensions of the box: 16.2 x 19.5 x 3.2 cm

Dimensions of the game board: 49 x 49 cm

The early editions were made by John Sands Pty. Ltd. under licence from Waddingtons, UK. This is the reason why United Kingdom properties were used.

Some printing anomalies can be found some on this board:

Trafalgar Square as well as Leicester Square have extra stroke bottom right in U.

The squeak in Q rest only outside the circle.

King Cross has no apostrophe between G and S but later versions seem to acquire this apostrophe.

The G has a small horizontal innerline like middle of e but this seems to have disappeared in later editions.

Lid: The lid shows the black/red "locomotive illustration" as it is on the United Kingdom editions.
Game Board: It's back is black with the "locomotive illustration" on one of the sections. The fold is parallel to the 2nd side. Its weight is 650 g (remarkably heavy). The board label has full stop and comma after Waddington LTD., and John Sands Pty. Ltd.
Rent on Piccadilly: It is £22 on the unimproved ground like the other yellow streets. (This error was made in 1935 in the USA already and was copied over the years in all countries until about 1980. From then on it became as it ought to be at £24.)
Community Chest: The cards are yellow. On the game board it only shows the small "C in circle".
Chance: The cards are orange/pink (90x52 mm).
Tokens: The well-known metal tokens car, hat, thimble, boat, shoe and iron.
Money: The circle on the banknotes show the mention "Pat.app.for" under the large figure. The seven banknotes are all made of coloured paper with black print. The denominations are: £1 (yellow), £5 (blue), £10 (white), £20 (green), £50 (purple), £100 (orange), and £500 (red on white).
Houses / Hotels: The houses are green and the hotels are dark maroon and both made of dull wood.
Dice: These are white with black pips.
Rules: These are printed in black on a 14.2 cm wide sheet, folded. It asks to "Please enclose 2d. stamp". It does not mention John Sands, but it says: "Extra money obtainable from all leading stores at 1/6 per set".

Edition: London edition - "Long Box" - Black Trade Mark - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - London and Leeds - ±1936

Dimensions of the box: 26.6 x 50.8 x 4.5 cm

Like Waddington's in England, John Sands made a black box version of the London set, next to the "Deluxe Gold edition", in Australia as well. It is an exact copy, except for some minor details and colour differences.

Box: The somewhat high box has a black lid with the red illustration with two black engines, two houses and the £ sign through the middle O, with the "precursor of Uncle Pennybags" on top. This set also says "Pat. App. For No. 3796-36" meaning that the patent was not yet granted.
Inner Box: The innerbox contains two black inserts with an orange tray in between. In this are some smaller holders to store the attributes. The larger black insert has a sticker with the useful text "This platform may be used as a lid for the centre section containing money, tokens, etc.". The bottom of this innerbox is untreated.
Game Board: The striking heavy game board weighs 620g.
Rent on Piccadilly: With the properties the rent of the last (unimproved) street is always somewhat higher than the others, except for the yellow streets. Therefore the rent on Piccadilly is the same as on the other streets, £22.
Community Chest / Chance: The entirely pink Chance and yellow Community Chest cards have the strange size of 47 x 90 mm. They have no rounded corners, nor are they numbered.
Tokens: The well-known metal tokens car, hat, thimble, boat, shoe and iron.
Money: The banknotes are printed in black on coloured paper (except for the 500 note) in the seven denominations: The denominations are: £1 (yellow), £5 (blue), £10 (black), £20 (pink), £50 (grey), £100 (orange), and £500 (red on white).
Houses / Hotels: The houses and hotels are of glossy wood.
Dice: These are are rather small and made of untreated wood, with red pips.
