It was found that this long box is a publication from 1984, despite the Rules show the year 1972, meaning that in 1972 a very large stock of Rules have been printed, or perhaps these old Rules ended up in this game a different way.

The soft lid of the box is in for Waddingtons so characteristic colors red/white/red with the logo of "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines and the £ sign" in the upper red bar. In the white section of the lid's rim is Monopoly in black characters.

The board still has clear features of the "transition period", such as:
• The green Waddingtons engine pointing backwards.
• Double names on the property spaces, typical Waddingtons.
• Only a very small black square on the Super Tax space, typical Waddingtons.
• No "engine illustration" in the centre of the board.
• The Parker Bros. copyright 1961 is mentioned underneath the word Monopoly in open characters.

This cover is 5 mm higher than the inner box. Why? The back of the board is red. In the white soft insert are 7 holes for the attributes. The yellow Chance and pink Community Chest cards are not illustrated. It is striking this set having 2 blank spare cards for the property deeds as well as for the Chance and Community Chest cards.

The rent of the unimproved Piccadilly is the same as of both other streets, only £22. The banknotes are printed in black on thin paper the back of it being printed with the logo of "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines and the £ sign". The denominations are resp.: 1 - 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 - 100 and 500.

The 6 metal tokens are resp.: boat - shoe - car - hat - dog and iron. The plastic houses are green and the hotels are red. Both have all-sided overhanging roofs and a chimney. Both dice are black with gold pips.

The game was "Made in England".

This set is a re-issue of the one of 1972 with Ref.# 402 of "The House of Games Waddingtons".

It is identical in all details, except for a few deviations as there are:
• The top red bar of the lid shows Waddingtons in a white rectangle instead of the "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines with £ sign" logo.
• The insert of the inner tray with 7 holes for the attributes is of red plastic instead of white.
• The dice are red with white pips.
• This edition shows 3 different years.
• This set was "Made and Printed in Great Britain".

On the red/white/red cover (the new!) Uncle Pennybags turn up from the "O" of Monopoly, while the old logo with "Uncle Pennybags between 2 engines with £ sign" is only on the rims.

Again there is a height difference between the lid and the inner box of an even 8 mm. This might be to protect the inner box? Inside this innerbox is a red insert with 8 trays.

The yellow Chance and pink Community Chest cards are not illustrated. It is striking this set having 2 blank spare cards for the property deeds as well as for the Chance and Community Chest cards. The rent of the unimproved Piccadilly is the same as of both other streets, only £22.

Some differences compared to the edition with Ref. #402 of the same period are:
• The red characters of the word Monopoly on the lid have a blue border.
• In the white section of the lid's rim is Monopoly in red characters.
• The plastic insert with 7 holes for the attributes is red.
• The property deeds are rectangular, so no rounded corners.
• The back of the Chance and Community Chest cards show in addition "Monopoly - Registered Trade Mark" and &q©All Copyrights Reserved".
• These cards are accompanied by a tiny cut out piece of paper "Packing Slip No." with 3 handwritten numbers added.

The rim of the lid shows a.o. "All Copyrights reserved. Made and printed in Great Britain".

1993

This box front has exactly the same front as the 1995 edition described below as well as the back of the box (see 1995 for description). Looking at the back of the box it seems that the insides are the same as well.

Therefore the only difference in this one and 1995 is the copyright date, making 1995 a reprint.

It is not clear why this set, manufactured in Waterford, Ireland for Waddingtons Games, has 2 reference numbers. Perhaps because the lid of the box is now also in red/white/red (ref.nr.44021 of 1984) and shows the "collection of attributes" (2 tokens, stack of banknotes; but not those belonging to the set!; 2 stacks of property deeds; 2 dice; 2 houses and 3 hotels) as well, as they appear on the other European sets, manufactured in Ireland since 1992 (with ref.nr.06951).

The height of the cover is now "normal" again, i.e. same as the height of the inner box. Also new for Waddingtons is the richly illustrated bottom of the box. In this case however it is not the "laughing family playing Monopoly", but a display of all parts of the game. It clearly shows that the inner box with its red plastic insert serves as Banker's Tray, as is said on the rims. Unfortunately you will not find this nice Banker's Tray, but just a ordinary one with 12 holes!

The strong board with red back shows the word Monopoly in its centre with open characters parallel to the first side. The fold of the board is parallel to side 2. The banknotes are according the new austere design, without any copyright mention and with a black bar in the upper part of the circle with "Monopoly with Uncle Pennybags". These banknotes are also used with the Hasbro sets with Ref. Nr. 14535 since 1996.

So this obviously is a "transitional issue" from Waddingtons to Hasbro. Also the 10 tokens, the houses and hotels are exactly the same as those of the game with Ref. Nr. 14535. The Chance and Community Chest cards do have a repeating text on the back side.
