Classic Versions 1950 to 1961 (Australia)

1950

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Red - Post War - Trade Mark - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington -  Leeds - ±1950

Dimensions of the box: 15.2 x 18.2 x 2.9 cm

This is the first time John Sands applies a logo, being an hourglass with his initials inside the instrument.

The reasons it is thought the year of publication of this red box edition is estimated to be ±1950:

  • New sizes: the Mini box is 10 mm smaller and shorter than those made during WW II.
  • The John Sands logo with initials inside the instrument.
  • New label: The label is printed directly onto the cover by litho.

Lid: The lid shows the black "locomotive illustration" in a red square.
Rent on Piccadilly: The rent on Piccadilly is £22 like the other two yellow streets.
Community Chest / Chance: The pink Chance and pale blue Community Chest cards are smaller (40-50mm height x 76mm width) and sre made of rigid card.
Tokens: The 5 tokens are different colored 2-3 mm thick 18 mm diam. plastic discs.
Money: The banknotes are printed in colour on off white paper. The seven denominations are: 1 (black on grey green), 5 (red), 10 (blue), 20 (black), 50 (brown), 100 (green) and 500 (red).
Houses / Hotels: The houses and hotels are made of smooth wood. However the houses have almost the same length as the hotels.
Dice: The dice are bluish purple with uncoloured pips.
Rules: The Rules are printed in black on a 12.7 cm wide sheet, saying: "Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope."
1955

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - White - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - London / Leeds - ±1955

Dimensions of the box: 15.2 x 18.2 x 2.9 cm

Dimensions of the game board: 49 x 49 cm

This white small box has a strange match with the red box above in that both editions have red houses and green hotels in irregular sizes.

Features of this edition are:

Game Board: The back of the game board is a sort of royal blue, but with a different label than on the lid of one of its parts. This corresponds with the one on the green box, however on a mid-blue background. The fold is perpendicular to the 1st side.
Rent on Piccadilly: It is £22 on the unimproved ground like the other yellow streets.
Community Chest: Shows the blue Parker Brothers' treasure chest on the board.
Chance: The pink Chance and hard blue Community Chest cards are made of rigid card stock.
Tokens: The six tokens are wood turned pawns.
Houses / Hotels: The 32 houses and 12 hotels are made of wood. The houses all vary slightly in size and on many one side is taller than the other.
Money: The circle on the banknotes show the mention "Pat.app.for" under the large figure. The seven banknotes are printed in various colours on coloured paper. They are: £1 (black on green), £5 (black on tan), £10 (red on tan), £20 (black on dark pink), £50 (green on light pink), £100 (red on white) and £500 (black on blue).
Locomotives on the station spaces: The "back driving" engine is according to the Waddingtons design, however uncoloured.
1957

Edition: London edition - "Small Box" - Red Trade Mark - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - Leeds - ±1957

Dimensions of the box: 15.2 x 18.2 x 2.9 cm

Dimensions of the game board: 49 x 49 cm

Because of the following facts this edition has to be dated around 1960:

  • The ancient looking illustration of the lid shows the new John Sands hourglass logo with his initials outside the instrument.
  • The new sizes: this Small box is now 10mm smaller and shorter than those made during WW II.
  • The label is printed directly onto the cover by litho.
  • The Rules are printed in blue on a sheet of 12.7cm width.

But it is hard to understand why:

  • Such an out of date design of a precursor of Rich Uncle Pennybags is applied on the lid.
  • The Parker Brothers' design with funny sketches of the American Uncle Pennybags was used for the Chance and Community Chest cards.

The sole reason I can imagine these "Parker design cards" were applied is because (worldwide) the "patentless era" or "transition era" set in. This is why the influence of Waddington in all Commonwealth and European countries decreased, while that of Parker Brothers increased and licensees changed.

Other features of this edition are:

Game Board: It's back is white and both parts are connected with clearly visible red tape. The fold is parallel to the 1st side.
Rent on Piccadilly: With the properties the rent of the last (unimproved) street is always somewhat higher than the others, except for the yellow streets. Therefore the rent on Piccadilly is the same as on the other streets, £22.
Community Chest: The Community Chest field on the game board only shows the small, rhomb-shaped square.
Locomotives on the station spaces: The "back driving" engine is according to the Waddingtons design, however, uncoloured.
Super Tax: Only shows a small, rhomb-shaped square, which is typical for the Waddingtons design.
Houses / Hotels: The houses and hotels are of a dull wood.
Dice: The dice are both dark blue with white pips.
Rules At the end it says the makers are willing to reply to your questions, but "Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope."

Edition: London edition - "Long Box" - White - War Time Production - Pat.app.for No.3796-36

Publisher: John Sands Pty. Ltd./John Waddington - Leeds - ±1957

Dimensions of the box: ± 25 x 51 cm

This edition is interesting because of the fact the label on the lid is the same, incl. the J.S. logo as of the Small Box before this and the Rules are printed in blue. The rectangular game board can now be stored inside the box.

The innerbox is a grey blue and white insert as well as a tray for the houses, hotels and tokens. There are six metal tokens, among which the well-known boat, a running horse with rider and the iron and furthermore the unknown ring, trompet player and archer.

The banknotes are the well-known Monopoly notes with "Pat.app.for no.3796-36" in the circle. They are printed in black on coloured paper in the usual denominations.

The Chance cards are pink and the Community Chest cards blue. They are both illustrated with the Parker Brothers' images. The colours of the card stock applied are the usual for over many years, however the uncommon illustrations are commented on already with the Small Box before this.
