version 2000

Presentatie:
versie 2000

 Number of versions: 28

  Edition: May 18, 2010

Germany is one of the countries where the streets on the board are not those of a (capital) city, nor of a number of cities of the country, but just generic streets. However, the intitial editions issued in the late thirties indeed showed Berlin streets.

From Los onwards the properties on the post-war editions are:

Badstraße - Turmstraße - Chaussestraße - Elisenstraße - Poststraße - Seestraße - Hafenstraße - Neue Straße - Münchner Straße - Wiener Straße - Berliner Straße - Theaterstraße - MuseumstraßeOpernplatz - Lessingstraße - Schillerstraße - Goethestraße - Rathausplatz - Hauptstraße
Bahnhofstraße
- Parkstraße and Schloßallee.

The stations also have not city related names: Südbahnhof - Westbahnhof - Nordbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof

Identification and location in time.

1935 the first  Monopoly editions of Parker Brothers were published in Amerika, almost immeditely followed by the English variant of  Waddington. The design of this English variant was also issued before World War II in other European countries, like France and Germany.

Considering the agitated time in the thirties in Germany and the subsequent war, it remained silent around Monopoly after an unsuccesful introduction in 1936 till long after 1945 (= end of WW II).

Features of the Waddington design are:

Monopoly is on the midfield of the gameboard in open characters.
Under that is the "
engines illustration" and a copyright-rule.

On the stations is a green locomotive pointing to the right.

On the Gemeinschaft space is only a <-sign in a circle.

On the Zusatz-Steuer space is only a square with black spot.

The prison rascal has small lips.

The policeman pointing the direction to the jail  does have a blue cap but no whistle.

The Ereignis-Fach on the game board is red and the Gemeinschafts-Fach is yellow.

The rent of all unimproved yellow streets is equal, viz. M 440.-.

There are 8 banknotes, the denomination of which are in Spielmarken: 10 - 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000.

From 1961 onwards the games are in the Parker Brothers design, the features of which are:

Monopoly is on the midfield of the board in closed characters.

On the stations is a black locomotive pointing to the left.

The Gemeinschafts spaces show a blue treasure chest.

The Zusatz-Steuer space shows a gold ring with diamond.

The prison rascal has thick lips.

The policeman pointing the direction to the jail now has a blue cap as well as a  whistle.

The Ereignis-Fach as well as the Gemeinschafts-Fach do not have a color anymore and the relevant cards are white with a light blue and pink imprint.

The rent of the unimproved yellow street Goethestraße originally increases from DM 440.- to DM 580.- and changes in the nineties into DM 480.- again.

The are 7 banknotes of "real Monopoly money" with the inscription "pat.app. for no. 3796-36". The denominations are: 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 (white) - 2000 and 10.000.

Originally it was only the Franz Schmidt Spiele-Fabrik in München, known since 1914 because of their invention of the Aggravation game, who published Monopoly games in Germany.
With the influence of Parker Brothers, around 1961,  a second toys manufacturer, Brohm Spielwahren GmbH. also published these games. I have no idea what the reason for this could have been. However, this was of short duration, because from about 1982 onwards these German manufacturers did no longer join and the whole came in hand of Parker Brothers/General Mills Inc./Tonka and finally Hasbro.

The site of the German collector Roland Klose  gives following classification:

1953 - 1968 Schmidtspiele
1968 - 1974 Brohmspiele
1975 - 1984 General Mills
1985 - 1987 Kenner/Parker
1987 - 1990 Tonka
 since  1991 Hasbro

In the sixties the developments have probably been very tumultuous, because Parker Brothers was pushing his name all over Europe. On the one side still games are issued with the Waddington "engines illustration" with the caption  "Alle Rechte Vorbehalten - Marke und Modell Geschützt" on the lid, while on the other side games with the clear mention "Lizenz Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A." of Parker were sold, like in France and The Netherlands by the way.
In any case the game board is in this period always according to the Parker Brothers design (so with black locomotives) and the names of the streets still mentioned twice.
From 1982 onwards the names of the spaces are only mentioned once.

In 1982 and 1985 the banknotes have been changed. The text inside the circle now reads "Monopoli® - Monopoly® - Monopol®" and "Copyright 1935 by Parker Brothers USA". A denomination of DM 50 has been added, while DM 200 expired and DM 500 supersedes DM 400, so the denominations finally became: 20 - 50 - 100 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000.

Edition: Monopoly - Berlin, Nr.102
Publisher: Waddington/Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt - Nürnberg - 1936
Dimensions of the box: 26.5 x 49.3 cm
The game:
In Heft 5/95 of the German paper "Spielbox" Dan Glimne and Barbara Weber wrote in their article
“Monopoly - die internationale Geschichte” about the first German Monopoly editions:

”The company Franz Schmidt in Nürnberg, one of the predecessors of the present Schmidt Spiele, got the first licence for the manufacture and distribution of Monopoly in 1936. This edition had the streets and squares of Berlin. Of this edition 5000 copies have been made. However it wasn't very successful. Sales went very slowly and the remaining stock got lost as the company in Nürnberg was bombed.
During the war Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt received a letter from the “Reichsleitung der Hitlerjugend”  (State administration of the Hitler youth) ordering to stop production of the game because the game “did not tend to improve German youth education because of it's speculative character”. Unfortunately this document fade away in the course of time.
However, some copies of this so humiliated game circulated in officersclubs of the people's comrades. Probably the gentlemen themselfs already had sufficient education.
However, there are also strong rumours that "Volksgenosse" Goebbels could not tolerate the translators situated his Berlin residence Schwanenwerder at the present Schloßallee space with high rents and so the people got aware the people's comrades were doing a bit too well. ”

In Heft 04/2007 of the German paper "Spielbox" in his article "Neues aus alten Zeiten" Rudolf Rühle, member of the European Society of Game-Collectors in Bonn - Germany, reports (page 33):

"A copy of the pre-war issue of this edition, having the same appearance  as the post war gold issues of Franz Schmidt (without the later company logo), turned up with a staggering note at the end of the Rules. It doesn't say "Franz Schmidt Spielefabrik" but with the address Nürnberg Landgrabenstraße 44 (like the Schmidt works address) a mr. Paul Ksoll has his company here as "Sole licensee of the party game 'Monopoly' in German language."
Research in a.o. the towns' archive of Nürnberg, led to following theory:
Ksoll had acquired the licence for Monopoly, hired space to manufacture and had just started production. He than became dangerously ill and gave everything Franz Schmidt. In any case he died 1937 in an unknown place. Franz Schmidt took over what was present, founded his own company and manufactured, Monopoly as well. However, the game wasn't manufactured for long. 1938 it was mentioned for the last time in the company's catalgue. There were rumors the nationalsozialistic government did not like the subject and therefore it had to be taken out their programme. However, it is also possible sales of this expensive game was simply too small. In any case this issue with the streets of Berlin is very well appreciated by today's collectors."

Deutsche Spielwaren-Zeitung of January 1938. And the article continues:

"The "Deutsche Spielwaren-Zeitung" (German Toys Paper) of January 1938 (click here for a higher quality picture) contains an advertisement of the Kleefeld company of their new game Monopoly, unfortunately without an image.
(Note: Under the sloping word "Monopoly" is the abbreviation D.R.W.Z. what stands for "Deutsches Registriertes Warenzeichen" i.e. "Registered German Trade Mark".
What does this mean with regard to the issue of Franz Schmidt?
)
Presumably to prevent plagiarism blames its design was somewhat changed. In the German Toys-Museum in Chemnitz a game board is shown (without a box nor Rules) having the title Monopoly in the middle (see the picture below). This board does not have streets, but series of German cities instead. Otherwise it corresponds to the original to a large extent. Everything speaks for it that it thereby concerns the Klee game. Since so far no other copies emerged, the circulation might have probably been very small. ...... Not until 1953 Franz Schmidt launched the original game again, however with reference to a Waddingtons licence."

In Edition 02/2010 of the English issue of the German paper "Spielbox" Rudolf Rühle publishes his latest discovery of how things developped with the very first German Monopoly edition as follows:

"The theory that Franz Schmidt was able to take over a factory newly established by a certain Paul Ksoll has not proven true. According to most recent findings, it seems that Ksoll, the license holder of Monopoly for Germany, had a small print run produced by Franz Schmidt in order to distribute it on his own afterwards. At least one copy was known to be on the market. In this copy, one can discover the three letters F. S. N. on the gameboard in an unusual spot; this can be explained as a producer's mark, which is common for printing houses. In contrast to this, the edition that followed from the Franz Schmidt company itself didn't show any manufacturer's data.
Probably because of Ksoll's severe disease, the license then went to Franz Schmidt, who kept Monopoly
in his product line for some time, but without great success. Only on the second try, in 1953, did it work out well with Monopoly. At that time, Franz Schmidt's company was no longer located in Nuremberg. In the course of the air strikes on Nuremberg starting in 1943, the company office retreated to Vilshofen. In 1948, the company then moved from the provisory seat Vilshofen to Munich."

The first Klee Monopoly of 1937. (The photo of the ad is in courtesy of Deutsches Spiele-Archiv - Marburg - D and that of the 1937 game board is in courtesy of the German Toys-Museum in Chemnitz .)

All spaces of the board of this Klee-edition of about 1937 are from Start ("Wer passiert erhält 150,-") onwards:
Zahle Polizeistrafe (Pay police penalty) - Staatskasse (Community Chest) - Breslau - Königsberg - Flugplatz Tempelhofer Feld Berlin - Zufall (Chance) - Würzburg - Nürnberg - München - Gefängnis - Osnabrück - Hannover - Magdeburg - Hauptbahnhof München - Staatskasse - Chemnitz - Dresden - Leipzig - Städtisches Wasserwerk (City Waterworks) - (Picture of a castle) - Schlachthof (abattoir) - In 's Gefängnis (Go to Jail) - Frankfurt a.M. - Stuttgart - Hauptbahnhof Hamburg - Essen - Düsseldorf - Köln - Städtisches Gaswerk (City Gasworks) - (Picture of jocky on horse) - Zufall -
Stettin
- Kiel - Berlin - Bahnhof Friedrichstraße Berlin - Öffentliche Abgeben (Public Tax) - Bremen - Hamburg

In 2003 a copy of the better known pre-war edition happened to come into Philip Orbanes' collection (USA), bought from the former owner Armin Frhr. von Gaisberg, who says about this set:

"By talking to older family members, we tried to find out where this set came from.  Unfortunately, we could not find out much more. All we know is, that this was a present from my grandfather to my mother. My grandfather owned a big book store in Stuttgart, Germany. That might explain how he could get hold of such a set."

Original German edition-1936This first German Monopoly edition came in a luxury gold box, with the "engines illustration" in blue in the upper left corner of the lid. (Remind the "Edition No.12" Gold Box in the series of American versions.
See: http://www.muurkrant.nl/monopoly/usa_classic_games.htm).
The game board, with white back, clearly shows all features of the Waddingtons' design, including the green locomotives on the station spaces pointing backwards. There is no "patent pending" or "trade mark" nor a "copyright" mentioned yet underneath the "engines illustration" in the board's centre.
The color of the playside is yellow/green. The text on the spaces is mentioned twice so that it can be read from all sides. The board's centre shows the word Monopoly in open characters with plumes of smoke through the N and P but no currency symbol inbetween.
Unlike the post war issues this first issue was with streets of Berlin, the capital city of Germany.
That is what makes this issue so special.

From Los onwards the properties are:

Hutten Straße - Turmstraße - Lehrter Bahnhof - Chaussee Straße - Invaliden Straße - Alt Moabit - Schönhauser Allee - Elektrizitäts Werk - Prenzlauer Allee - Neue König Straße - Bahnhof Alexanderplatz - Alexander Straße - Landsberger Straße - Große Frankfurter Straße - Köpenicker Straße - Warschauer Straße - Wiener Straße - Görlitzer Bahnhof - Oranien Straße - Gitschiner Straße - Wasser WerkBelle Alliance Straße - Friedrich Straße - Leipziger Straße - Unter den Linden - Potsdamer Bahnhof - Grunewald and Insel Schwanenwerder.

Berlin edition Nr.102. Remark that:

only 4 (underlined) properties correspond with the nowadays issue.

the color bars of the light brown and red streets of the board have been covered up by a different colored sticker
because the property deeds had been printed wrongly. The purple streets are also re-stickered in a confusingly
red
although the bar on the deeds is in the right color. (However, there also exsist game boards of which no color
bars have been re-stickered.)

Like in the Waddingtons editions of other countries the rent of all unimproved yellow streets is equal, viz. RM 440.-.

Franz Schmidt from the very start applied stickers with a number to distinguish the games.

All banknotes of the Berlin 1936 edition. The Ereignis- and Gemeinschaftskarten are like in all Waddingtons' early issues orange and yellow cards with rounded corners.
There are 8 banknotes in Reichsmark. The design and denominations are according to the picture shown. See the different presentation of the locomotive and house compared to the modern banknotes.
It is strange that 8 banknotes were applied, whereas the other European countries manufacturing Monopoly games, like France,
Holland and Switserland, under licence of the London company Waddington used 7 denominations.
These notes were printed in black on colored paper and their denominations are: 10 - 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000.
It was not necessary (nor possible?) for this German company to import the American/English metal tokens, because being the
manufacturer of the Aggravation game, they could use the 6 pawns of this game.
Both the green houses and red hotels are of glossy wood
There is but one red wooden die in this set; the other one must have been lost.

(Also see the 1982 Replica issue as well as the 2003 Nostalgic version.)

Recovered 1936 Gold Box.Edition: Monopoly - Berlin, Nr.102  survided in the GDR
Publisher: Waddington/Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt - Nürnberg - 1936
Dimensions of the box: 51x 27x 4cm
                  of the board: 49 x 50 cm
The game:
This set is from the collection of Roland Klose - D.
Roland explanes about this set, played with in the former East Germany (GDR):

"There were Monopoly sets in the GDR as well.... if you were in luck to safe one of the Reichmarks-editions. Unfortunately I'm not able to directly prove this set has been in the GDR, but it is to be accepted since it was found at a flea market in Erfurt - East Germany. In addition, both the box and especially the game board have been restored. It was tried to reconstruct the original color of the box as well as its surface texture. The gold structure of the game board was taken away and replaced by wrapping paper. The work was done extremely careful, reason why I assume that also that was done in the GDR. In West Germany one would have bought a new game rather than taking such pains."

Gouden doos uit 1953.Edition: Standard - gold box, Nr. 102/1 (1a)
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ±1953
Dimensions of the box: 50.5 x 27.0 x 4.5 cm
                  of the board: 48.1 x 47.8 cm
The game:
This set is from the collection of Roland Klose - D. (The color differences between the shown gold boxes are caused by different ways of storing over the period of about 50 years).

The stickers at the bottom of the box tell us three things:

1. The reference number is 102/1.
2. This set was sold by a firm named FELDHAUS in Köln at the price of DM 15.-.
3. The bottom of this gold box is purple colored.

Sticker on the bottom of Gold Box from 1953. This set is similar to the next one (1), except for:

the green houses and red hotels that are of fine glossy timber. This is also the reason why this issue is estimated to be of a few
years earlier.

the colorbars of the Badstraße and Turmstraße are mahogany.

This set was sold on ebay for  € 12.- September 2006.

Banknotes of the fifties.Edition: Standard - gold box, Nr. 102/1 (1b)
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ±1955
Dimensions of the box: 49.5 x 27.0 x 4.0 cm
                  of the board: 48.2 x 47.8 cm
The game:
Again a set from the collection of Roland Klose - D.

There are but minor differences between this version and the one issued in 1953 (1a), as there are:

the slightly shorter box length.

the colorbars of the Badstraße and Turmstraße are dark blue.

Like in all post-war Gold boxes the number of banknotes is still 8, like in the pre-war editions, however the colors differ. The new notes were printed in black on colored paper and their denominations are: 10 - 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000.

Dinkelsbühl edition, ±1953.Edition: Gold box, Nr. 102/1 - transformed into a Dinkelsbühl edition
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ±1953
Dimensions of the box: 50.5 x 27.0 x 4.5 cm
The game:
This set is from the collection of David Miller - UK. As he saw this set offered on
ebay by a Hamburg - D resident he got the impression he had to do with some special edition. So we went for advise to our mutual friend Roland Klose - D, a Monopoly as well as Germany authority. His comments are:

"Because of the fact this set has glossy wooden houses and hotels and the length of the box is about 50 cm the Gold box must be of the 1953 version.
Since this set is so carefully recovered it is obvious to assume it was done by and for someone who lived in the former East Germany (GDR). Not only was the Gold Box made unrecognizable by the green paper on the lid and bottom section, but the owner (?) also tried to create the impression this to be a game of the perfectly preserved, historic old town Dinkelsbühl, situated between Stuttgart and Nürnberg in West Germany.
See the green edges of the Gold Box.This making the game unrecognizable was important for the GDR resident for 2 reasons:

  1. Up till 1954 people from both the West and East territory of Germany could relatively easy cross the borderline. Afterwards it became almost impossible. As from 1961 the frontier was bolted and GDR citizens could not and were not allowed to go to the West sector. That lasted till the falling of the iron curtain November 9, 1989. As far as games could brought into the GDR they should definately not be capitalistic, like Monopoly, nor be of modern, western design.

  2. A game like Monopoly was a problem for anybody living in de GDR, so it had to be covered with something. Because you could any moment be betrayed by someone in your vicinity you never should show a game like Monopoly to a person you did not know very well. Again a reason to make a capitalist game like an innocent history based one.

All these considerations make me believe this transformed Monopoly edition was owned by a GDR resident."

Conclusion: David had found an very special edition indeed!

German Gold Box ref. 102/1.Edition: Standard - gold box, Nr. 102/1   (1)
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ±1958
Dimensions of the box: 48.7 x 26.5 x 4.7 cm
                  of the board: 47.0 x 47.4 cm
The game:
The reference number mentioned is on a sticker at the bottom of the box.
Sticker at the bottom of the gold box ref.102/1.
The Rules, printed on poor paper, starts to mention  "Herausgegeb. mit Genehmigung d. Fa. John Waddington Ltd., Leeds 10 (England)". Taking into consideration that no copyright etc. is mentioned under the "engines-illustration" on the game board, I suppose this set must have been issued in the fifties. A second reference to Waddington is the "green locomotive pointing to the right" at the stations.

The centre of the gold colored lid shows the "engines-illustration" (= 2 locomotives and 2 houses, without the currency symbol (!) under the word Monopoly) as a modest blue logo. Although the bord's back is covered with white paper, its borders are gold colored at the playside. Both parts of the board are combined by a red cloth ribbon. When folded its playside is turned outwards. The color of the playside is dark green. The text on the spaces is mentioned twice so that it can be read from all sides. The board's centre shows the word Monopoly in open characters with plumes of smoke through the N and P.
Like in the Wadington editions of other countries the rent of all unimproved yellow streets is equal, viz. M 440.-.
This set is similar to the one (1a), except for:

the plastic houses in green and white and the hotels in red and white.

the colorbars of the Badstraße and Turmstraße are dark blue.

This set was sold on ebay for DM 47.- (€ 24.-) April 2000.

Silver box with wooden cross, 1958.Edition: Small box - silver colored, Nr. 102/2 (1)
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ± 1958
Dimensions of the box: 25.4 x 25.4 cm.
The game:
This cheaper (?) issue of the game is still one of the Waddingtons' design, reason why I date it in 1958 or earlier.
The ref.number is on the side rim of the lid.The game board in this square box consists of 4 pieces of one side pasted cardboard put together with a red ribbon in such a way that ugly red tracks cross the board. In folded state its playside is outwards so that the unimproved back is invisible.  The dimensions of the unfolded game board are  47.4 x 47.4 cm.
The innerbox is entirely pasted with dark blue paper. In the box is a wooden cross that causes 4 spaces to store the attributes.
The green houses and red hotels are of fine glossy wood. The tokens are 6 Aggravation pawns.
There is one dark blue and one black die with gold colored pips.

At the introduction of this game its price was DM 10.-.
On ebay it was sold for DM 53.- (€ 27.-) November 2000.

Gold box variant ref. 102/3.Edition: Standard - gold box, Nr. 102/3  (1)
Publisher: Waddington/Franz Schmidt, Spiele-Fabrik -
München - ± 1960
Dimensions of the box: 26.5 x 49.3 cm
The game:
The sticker at the bottom of the box this time says "Nr. 102/3 Monopoly Preisgebunden".  It is striking that in this game the price was cut off the sticker. This may mean there were distributors to whom a fixed price applied and those who were free to make their own selling price.

Also the Rules of this edition say  "Herausgegeb. mit Genehmigung d. Fa. John Waddington Ltd., Leeds 10 (England)".
So it is still a variant with green locomotives at the stations, however there are a number of differences compared to the ref.nr. 102/1:

On the lid is a dark blue sticker (diam. 45 mm) of the manufacturer who presents himself as SPIELE - SCHMIDT.

The sides of the innerbox are white and the bottom is pasted with white paper as well.

The content of the innerbox is also entirely white. Instead of a stuffing piece in the centre is a "banknotes holder" for all 8 banknotes.

The board's back is white, as is the ribbon who keeps both parts together.

The board can be folded with its back outwards as well as with its playside.

The color of the board's playside is light green.

The houses and hotels are of white plastic, where the roofs of the houses are green and those of the hotels are  red.

The price of this set amounted to DM 35.- (€ 18.-) October 2000.

Silver box ref.102/2 now acc. to Parker Bros.Edition: Small box - silver colored, Nr. 102/2  (2)
Publisher: Parker Bros./Spiele-Schmidt - München - 1961
Dimensions of the box: 25.4 x 25.4 cm.
The game:
This edition is probably an "interim variant", because it still has the 8 old banknotes and the rent of all unimproved  yellow streets are still the same. The Ereigniskarten and Gemeinschaftskarten are also still of entirely red and yellow heavy paper.

However the game board of solid cardboard has a red back and is according to the Parker Brothers design. It is striking how the board's playside has been pasted on the cardboard: right across the word Monopoly a red track of the underground is visible. The dimensions of this unsquare game board deviates again:  46.4 x 47.2 cm, so about 2 cm smaller than normal. The playside is on the outside again.
The names are still mentioned twice on the spaces.
The silver colored lid shows the word Monopoly in blue, with under it those 2 houses and 2 locomotives. Under
at the left in a blue rosette is the logo of the manufacturer Spielefabrik Frans Schmidt.
The innerbox is blue and has a soft white plastic insert with 5 holes.
The green houses and red hotels are of nice glossy wood. The tokens are  6 Agravation pawns.
Both dice are black with gold pips.

The price of this set amounted to DM 25.- (€ 13.-) October 1998.

White, long box, ref.102/3.Edition: Standard - white box, Nr. 102/3 (2)
              "Lizenz Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A."
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt -1961
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 48.6 cm
The game:
In the sixties a number of versions have been issued without any reference number. Originally the Rules with Nr. 102/2 - Nr. 102/3  were used.

Because of the fact that the content of this box is exactly equal to that of the gold box 102/3, except for the game board, this version of the "long box" must also be considered as an "interim variant".
The game board is now according to the Parker Brothers design, so with the word Monopoly in closed characters on the midfield, with the copyright line under it.
The white lid of this set shows for the first time the game board in a green and blue field with a horizontal red bar containing the word Monopoly in white characters. In the blue field is the manufacturer's name, while on top the red bar it says "Lizenz Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A. and Alleinhersteller Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt - München". Underneath this bar is the logo of 2 engines with drawn Uncle Pennybags in a red square, without the number 77314. In the lower left corner is no Parker-swirl.
The rent of the unimproved yellow  Goethestraße is still DM 440.-.
The houses and hotels are of white plastic whereby the roof of the houses is green and that of the hotels is red.

The price of this set amounted to DM 30.- (€ 15.45) October 2000.

White box with red bar of 1968.Edition: Standard white box, resembles ref.77314

            "Lizenz Parker Brothers Inc. U.S.A."
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 25.8 x 48.5 cm
The game:
The inside of the rim of the lid shows F. 8/68, from which can be concluded that this edition (without any ref. number) is manufactured in August 1968.

However, there still is talk of an "interim variant", because the banknotes are still Spielmarken and the Ereigniskarten and Gemeinschafstkarten are of entire dark red resp. cream heavy paper, although the game board (with white back) is according to Parker Brothers.
Under the red Monopoly bar is the picture of a drawn Uncle Pennebags in a red square, between 2 blue
locomotives. In the red field still is no number 77314.
Very special wooden houses and hotels. The innerbox is also very special: it exsists of 2 parts. The section with 8 holes for the banknotes can be taken out from the hard plastic insert.
The rent of the unimproved yellow  Goethestraße is still DM 440,-.

The special thing of this version is the houses and hotels to be of white wood with resp. a green and red roof. (Compare the set described before this one where the houses are in the same design, however made of plastic).
The 6 tokens are Aggravation pawns. Both dice are white with black pips.

This set was made by the Spielefabrik in München itself.

The price amounted to DM 28.- (€ 14.50) October 1998.

Standard white box from Brohm in the sixties.Edition: Standard - white box, Art. Nr. 601 1012
"Alle Rechte vorbehalten - Marke und Modell geschützt"
Publisher: Parker Spiele der Brohm Spielwaren - 1961/1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
In this edition is/are:

The lid white, printed with the red "engines illustration".

The back of the solid board is red

The word Monopoly is in closed black characters on the centre field of the game board.

The rent of the unimproved yellow  Goethestraße is DM 440.-.

The innerbox has two inserts of solid plastic: 1x with 7 trays an 1x with 7 spaces for the banknotes.

The 6 plastic tokens simple pawns.

Both dice blue with white pips.

Mahogany edition of Brohm Spielwaren GmbH.Edition: Monopoly Luxusausgabe,  mahogany,  Art.Nr. 601 1010
Publisher: Parker Spiele der Brohm Spielw.GmbH - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 26.0 x 50.8 cm
The game:
On the mahogany lid the game board is printed in gold inside a field of 2 squares, as we know it from the European sets manufactured in France as from 1961. The logo of "2 engines with Rich Uncle Pennybags", but without currency mark is printed in gold as well. This logo is under the Monopoly bar.
The fold of the board (with red back side) is parallel to the 1st side.
In the innerbox with red rim are 2 nice looking red felted inserts, each of them having 7 holes for the banknotes.

There is a double amount of money, so 9 players can join.  The Chance- and Community Chest  cards resp. have a pink and blue print  of the engines-pattern at the back.
The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße is DM 440.-, reason why I date this edition before 1970,
where as the mahogany sets of France, England and The Netherlands most likely have been published some  4 years later.
The tokens are the 8 pewter characters hat, wheelbarrow, car, thimble, shoe, horse, dog and iron. The plastic houses and hotels have overhanging roofs but no chimneys.
The 2 red dice do have gold pips.

Sonderausgabe with Maxine Brady's booklet in German (1).Edition: Monopoly, Titel-Nr. 96 999 8

"Sonderausgabe mit dem Monopoly-Buch von Maxine Brady" (1)
Publisher: Parker Brothers USA - ±1968
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
This issue is a Sonderausgabe (= special edition) because it is ment  for the members of a German Book Club. It's specialty is that this black box contains the German edition of the Maxine Brady booklet in a special space of the red plastic insert.
Furthermore this insert has 7 spaces for the banknotes, one for the property cards, one for the Ereignis- and Gemeinschafts cards, one for the tokens and dice, one for the houses and one for the hotels.

The game board is the regular board of this period, i.a. with the word Monopoly in black characters parallel to the first side. Its back is light blue. The crease is parallel to the second and fourth side.
The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße is DM 580.-. The Ereigniskarten are light blue and the Gemeinschaftskarten pink.
The bottom side of the box shows the story of Charles B.Darrow, inl. a picture of the man.
The 7 banknotes with the inscription "pat.app. for no. 3796-36" have the denominations: 20 - 100 - 200
400
- 1000 (white) - 2000 and 10.000.
There are 6 plastic pawns as tokens. The hollow, plastic houses are green and the hotels red. They have no chimney but do have an overhanging roof.

This edition was manufactured in France.

Germen Blue Case-1970.Edition: Monopoly - blue case, without ref.nr.
             "Lizenz Parker Brothers Inc. USA."
"Marke und Modell geschützt. - Alle Rechte vorbehalten."
Publisher: Parker Brothers Inc./Brohm Spielwaren - 1970
Dimensions of the case:  6.0 x 28.5 x 54.2 cm
The game:
This edition of this both in America, The Netherlands and Germany scarcely published blue plastic case is property of Dieter Höft - Bonn - Germany.
(He accidentally discovered it on a flea market, as a tool-box, among metalware.)

The lid shows a metal tag with the red Monopoly bar as well as the logo's of Brohm Spielwaren and Parker Brothers. The game board is clasped to the innerside of the lid. The other part of the case contains a moulded insert for as well the banknotes as the houses and hotels, property deeds, Ereigniskarten and Gemeinschafts-karten, dice and tokens. In contrast with the American edition there are no transparent tops to protect the banknotes.
The game board with white back, shows 1961 as the latest copyright year, while the word Monopoly is in
closed, black characters without frame on the board's centrefield, parallel to side one.
The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße still DM 440.-.

The Monopoly-banknotes (50x95 mm) still show the mention “pat.app.for N°3796-36”. They are printed in color on white paper and are in denominations of resp.: 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000
Speciaal autootje. The light blue Ereigniskarten and pink Gemeinschaftskarten (55x84 mm) have rounded corners. Their backs show a repeating pattern of locomotive - Uncle Pennybags - locomotive.
The 32 houses and 12 hotels made of unicolored plastic are respectively green and red and not, like in the American and Dutch cases,
composed of a white lower part and a colored roof. (This design of the houses and hotels occurred more often in this period.)
There are 10 metal tokens, the car of them being very special. The other tokens are the well-known: hat - shoe - dog - wheel-barrow - iron - boat -  canon -  rider-on-horse and thimble.
The insert contains a hole for 4 pairs of plastic red (with white pips) & white (with black pips) dice. A remarkable quantity, presumably for each of 4 players their own pair.

The game board is “Printed in France”, however the case is most probably manufactured by Dow in America.

Replica of the original issue of 1936.Edition: Monopoly - Replik der Deutschen Ausgabe von 1936.
              Auflage limitiert und numeriert,  Art.Nr.1006
Publisher: Parker Bros./Gen.Mills Inc. - Rodgau - 1982
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
A copy of this edition with "Nr. 00212" is owned by Christwart Conrad - Bonn. (The serial number of the set is not in the board's centre but next to the Jail corner.)
It immediately attracts attention the box is not gold colored something typical for the original first issue according to the Waddington's design. However, the lid clearly shows the Waddington "engines illustration". The bottom of the box is dark blue.

The light yellowish green centre field of the game board doesn't show the "engines illustration" under the word Monopoly like in the original edition, but "Reprint - 1982© 1935 by Parker Brothers, U.S.A. - Marke und Modell geschützt - Alle Rechte vorbehalten".
Another deviation from the original version is the position of the board's crease: in this Parker Brothers issue the crease is perpendicular on the first side.

From Los onwards the properties on the board are identical to the original. The colors slightly differ:

Hutten Straße - Turmstraße -  Lehrter Bahnhof - Chaussee Straße - Invaliden Straße - Alt Moabit - Schönhauser Allee - Elektrizitäts Werk - Prenzlauer Allee - Neue König Straße - Bahnhof Alexander-
platz - Alexander Straße - Landsberger Straße - Große Frankfurter Straße - Köpenicker Straße
Warschauer Straße
- Wiener Straße - Görlitzer Bahnhof - Oranien Straße - Gitschiner Straße - Wasser Werk - Belle Alliance Straße - Friedrich Straße - Leipziger Straße - Unter den Linden - Potsdamer Bahnhof - Grunewald and Insel Schwanenwerder.

It appears as well for the pre-war as the post-war edition the street names on the board to be written apart, while they are written together on following property deeds:
Huttenstraße - Turmstraße - Chausseestraße - Invalidenstraße - Alexanderstraße - Oranienstraße and Friedrichstraße. Next streets are with hyphen on the cards only: Alt-Moabit - Belle-Alliance-Straße - Elektrizitäts-Werk and Wasser-Werk.
The rent on all unbuilt yellow  properties is the same again, i.e. RM 440,-.

I've never ever met a "replica" edition that exactly matched the original. And for that it is not necessary to
search for details. Except for the earlier mentioned differences this issue for example also shows to possess 7 banknotes instead of 8. The 7 denominations match those of the standard editions but the colors and currency differ. In Reichsmark they are resp.: 20 - 100 - 200 - 400 - 1000 - 2000 and 10000
The Ereignis- and Gemeinschaftskarten are the same as those of the original issue, so orange and yellow.  Christwart Conrad has carefully compared  his set with the very first issue of the Berlin edition and discovered that even the old, grammatically wrong text has been copied from the "Go to Jail" cards: The sentence "Begebe Dich direkt dorthin" has been improved in the present issues into "Begib Dich direkt dorthin".
Unfortunately the 6 tokens of this edition are the usual Aggravation pawns again. The green house and red hotels are of glossy timber. The dice are of varnished timber.
The set also contains an owners-document mentioning its number as well as Colin Dunne, the Gen.Mills, Inc. branche manager's signature.

(Also see the 1936 Original issue as well as the 2003 Nostalgic version.)

The long box for the first time more colorful.Edition: Standard, Art. Nr. 1009
Publisher: Parker Bros./Gen.Mills Inc. - Rodgau - 1982
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
Like in other countries a new presentation is introduced with this issue.
On the colorful cover is Los (Go) and a part of Badstrasse with hotel, Schlossallee (unbuilt, with car) and Parkstrasse with 1 house (with chimney, whereas the houses and hotels of the game do not have any chimney). The red dice show a 2 and 5.
Under that, over the whole length of the lid, is Monopoly in white characters in a red bar.
On the back of the box are 3 poor black and white pictures as well as a short description of the game. On the rim of the lid is a.o. the "Parker-swirl" with under that the text "Weltbekannt durch Monopoly".

On the board with red back is Monopoly in open characters without frame. The crease of the board is parallel to the 2nd side. The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße is DM 580.-.
The 7 banknotes have the text "Pat.app. for N°3796-36" and are again in the colors: 20 - 50 - 100 - 5001000 - 2000 and 10.000.
The white innerbox contains a solid red tray with 12 holes for the banker. The green houses and red hotels are plastic and do have overhanging  roofs again. This edition has 8 of the well-known pewter tokens and is so suitable  for 8 players.

This game was manufactured in France.

The game:
This "small box" edition also has the colorfull lid.

The back of the solid, double folded game board red.

The word Monopoly in open characters on the midfield of the bord.

The logo of Spielefabrik Franz Schmidt and the Parker-swirl on two sides of the lid's rim.

The whole exterior of the innerbox is white.

The bottom of the box shows a black and white picture of the game board with its attributes.

The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße DM 580.-.

The 6 tokens plastic pawns.

Both dice are red.

This set was manufactured in France.

Standard box of 1985.Edition: Standard, Art.Nr. 001111690177
Publisher: Kenner Parker - Rodgau -1985
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
(The Art.Nr. is only mentioned on the play side of the game board.)
The design of this game looks very well like the issue of 1982. The cover, however is slightly less colorful but shows the red bar with Uncle Pennybags now over the picture of a part of the fourth side of the board. This time Badstrasse is not shown. The bottom of the box now shows, as with the corresponding sets of other countries, one large black and white picture of the board with the money and other attributes around.
The game board has a
blue green midfield as well and its back is red again. Monopoly is in closed, black characters in a frame diagonally on the midfield.
The rent of the unimproved yellow Goethestraße is DM 580.-.
The tray is of soft red plastic and the division (with 7 sections for the banknotes) is the same.
The banknotes show in the circle "Monopoli® - Monopoly® - Monopol®" and "Copyright 1935 by Parker
Brothers USA". The colors have not been changed with regard to 1982, however the denomination DM 50 has been added, DM 50 expired while DM 500 supersedes DM 400, so the denominations became: 20 - 50100 - 500 - 1000 - 2000 and 10.000.
The green houses and red hotels are of plastic and have overhanging roofs. This set has 8 pewter tokens.

This game was made in France.

Sonderausgabe from 1985.Edition: Sonderausgabe, Art.Nr. 001111690177

"Exclusivausgabe für Club - Mitglieder" (2)
Publisher: Kenner Parker - Rodgau -1985
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
For obscure reasons the German Book Club decided to choose for an deviating presentation of their Sonderausgabe 17 years after their first (?) issue.
Instead of that typical black box (as it is applied later again) the box of the standard issue is applied now, showing a big yellow sticker saying this concerns an exclusive edition. It also quotes a description of Maxine Brady's booklet from the paper Spielbox Nr.4/1983, saying this booklet unfortunately is not available on the market.

The game board's midfield shows Monopoly in closed, black characters diagonally on the midfield. The back side is red and the fold is perpendicular on side one.
The sole place showing the Art.Nr. is on the play side of the board, next to Jail.
The bottom of the box does not show laughing-Charles-Darrow-at-piles-of-banknotes, but  3 very simple black/white pictures of a wrong game board, like in 1982. Therefore the mention "Abweichungen von dieser Abbildung in Farbe und Gestaltung sind möglich" (=) is very valid here. The red plastic insert of the inner box is the same as in the box of ±1968, so with the special space for the booklet. Conclusion: This issue is a compilation of:

lid of the standard box from 1985

inner box with black/white picture from the 1982 edition

red insert from the black Sonderausgabe from ±1968

board with red back from 1985

The properties, Chance- and Community Chest cards, green plastic houses and rode hotels and the
dice
are again the same as those in the black box (1). The banknotes however are those from 1985, while the  tokens are the plastic pawns as they are with the 1982 editions.

In 1992 and 1996 black Sonderausgaben-with-booklet were issued again.

This set was bought October 2001 on the SPIEL'01 fair in Essen - Germany at the price of DM 28.- (= € 14.35).

Standard edition as anniversary issue-1985.Edition: Standard - 50 Jahre Jubiläumsausgabe, Art.Nr.1009
Publisher: Parker Bros./Gen.Mills Inc. - Rodgau - 1985
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 51 cm
The game:
For this version for the 50 years anniversary of this game, like in other countries, the standard edition from ... 1982 was used. The 3 differencers are:

  1. The lid shows in the upper left corner (like in the Dutch edition) the gold print "50 Jahre". (Strangely enough is this print on the Belgian set in the upper right corner.)

  2. The Rules are in a nice booklet, in which in addition the (wrong) history of Monopoly is described.

  3. The metal tokens are gold colored.
