Manchester United Football Club
(United Kingdom)

Manchester United's history began when workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway decided to form a team of their own in 1878, known as Newton Heath. Only after Newton Heath went bankrupt in 1902 did Manchester United emerge like a phoenix from the ashes to become the great team we know and love today.

With the end of the Second World War, the great Sir Matt Busby took over as manager and set the club on the path to incredible footballing success. The club became renowned for nurting youthful talent starting with the famous "Busby Babes". Quickly dominating English football, the team won the First Division in successive seasons before the tragic Munich air crash of 1958 claimed the lives of eight players.

From this disaster, Sir Matt Busby set about rebuilding the team, and at the height of its footballing dominance in the mid-Sixties, every Manchester United player was a current international. Managers found itdifficult to emulate Busby's success. Only under Sir Alex Fergusson, who took over in 1986, have star players managed to combine to live up to the memory of their heroic predecessors.

8 Premier League Titles, 4 F.A. Cup titles, and the European Champions League in 1999, part of a seemingly unrepeatable dream Treble, have followed in the most successful years of the club's celebrated history!
