America In A Box

Publisher: Late For The Sky Prod. Comp.

Date: 1995

Dimensions of the box: 25.8 x 50.4 cm

Instead of GO it is Uncle Sam who piercingly looks at you and points with his finger that you should go to the left! The favourite landmarks and locations you than subsequently meets are:

ALCATRAZ, DEATH VALLEY, INDIANAPOLIS 500, MISSISSIPPI RIVER, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, KENTUCKY DERBY, THE ALAMO, THE WINDY CITY, MARDI GRAS, LAS VEGAS, ROSE BOWL, GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, NIAGARA FALLS, WRIGLEY FIELD, HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, CARNEGIE HALL, ROCKY MOUNTAINS, THE BIG APPLE, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, GRAND CANYON, "OLD GLORY" and STATUE OF LIBERTY.

Very interesting is of course the booklet "About The Board Spaces".

That tells for example about Alcatraz:

In the San Francisco Bay sits an island called Alcatraz - Spanish for "pelican". Discovered in 1545, it became a military reservation in 1850. It was changed to a military prison during and after the Civil War. In 1933 Alcatraz became a federal prison and housed some of the countries' most renowned criminals. Because of the surrounding waters' strong, cold currents, it was considered escape proof. It closed in 1963 and was reopened as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972. In its day as a federal prison, it was simply known as "The Rock".

And about The Big Apple it says:

Cultural center of the country, twice the population of any other U.S.city, the driving force of the world's economy, 19.6 million people in the immediate metropolitan area, it can only be one place - the Big Apple - New York, New York. "The place so big they had to name it twice". Founded in 1625 by the Dutch, it's the place considered by many to be the most facinating city in the world. Five boroughs make up The City: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan,  the Bronx and Staten Island. If you want action and excitement, there's no place like it.

To be mentioned for the rest:
  • That the 6 pewter tokens are symbols like the portrait of Uncle Sam, a Baseball glove, a Hot dog and a Paddle boat.
  • There is no "Jail" but a "Traffic Jam" instead.
  • Any player landing on "Florida" (instead of "Free Parking") is going on vacation and collects all the money in the centre of the board.
  • Instead of houses and hotels there are Pieces of Apple Pie and American Dreams (indicated with white clouds on a pedestal).
  • The small (44 x 78 mm) Big Fun and Contingency cards are illustrated with funny pictures and have amusing texts like "You finally get that dream Hawaiian vacation! Stand up and do the Hula or pay $ 50 for lessons" and "Money machine goes berserk! Collect $200".
