I have managed to get an interview with the family:
Where did the idea for the game come from?
It has been an idea in the back of our minds for a while. We have been massive fans of Monopoly from childhood days, enduring many power cuts over the years in which to hone our playing skills and accumulating a few special editions to replace our battered original set from the 70's.
We have always thought it would be a great idea to be able to have our own local set as it would be a perfect way to show off the wonderful character of Islay. When we discovered someone had created a "Highlands and Islands" set we were really excited. However, upon opening it, we were dismayed to find that our home island of Islay, the ' Queen of the Hebrides', was unrepresented. That was a bit of a letdown for us but but it became the motivation to find out how we could create a Monopoly for ourselves and show that Islay shouldn't be overlooked as a unique destination.
Who from your family was involved in creating the game (idea, designer, retailer?)
The whole Roy family played a part. Ben provided the initial impetus, acting on that disappointment, by tracking down Winning Moves and negotiating with them to be able to create a local edition. Then the great debate ensued between everyone as to what went where. From this point, Nick (brother) did the 3D Artwork and Dan (brother) the 2D Artwork, with Gael (Mum) and Colin (Dad) providing quality control before it went into final production. We are delighted to now be selling the Islay Monopoly in our family run gift shop, The Celtic House [established 1959] in Bowmore.
What is your favourite aspect of the game?
We love the fact that the whole game feels very authentic, as each property has its own graphic created in the style of the original Monopoly illustrations, rather than a photograph. We took great pleasure trying to capture the character of each place so that you literally feel like you are traveling around the island as you go round the board.
How does the game convey Islay life?
We just tried to include as much of the island as possible, from our spectacular unspoilt beaches, museums and villages to our abundant variety of birds and wildlife, maritime connections and of course distilleries, for which Islay has become internationally famous. Most aspects of Islay life are represented on the playing board, and all the things we couldn't actually fit on the board, are also shown in context in the centre of our 3d illustrated map of the island. We also worked hard to adapt the chance cards so each one has a local flavour. Some are local "in jokes" and others reflect the reality of Island life, I could try and explain but really its better to come and discover for yourself!
The result is something unique that tries to touch at the heart of what makes this place so special and such a wonderful place to grow up in or to visit with your family year after year.
How did you pick the different properties?
Being a very local place this was a major problem, as it was a balancing act to include everyone in one way or another. We started with a list of all the different villages and grouped them geographically. We also knew we wanted to compliment them with some beaches and museums. Our biggest sticking point was the four transport squares, as we only have two ferry ports and one airport. Eventually we settled on four of our beautiful lighthouses as they are iconic in this part of the world.
